Announcements

I am really glad to be working with you all this semester, and look forward to continued learning together!

SAFETY (when we meet in-person on October 18th and November 22nd)

* Masks: For our in-person (face-to-face) classes, please always wear a mask. I will try to keep social distancing within the classroom too. The situation with COVID-19 is getting better, but I want everyone to be safe.

* Vaccination: If you have not gotten vaccinated yet, please consider doing this. I think it is very helpful to protect you, your family, and your classmates.

....................................................

If you have any questions or comments, please email me at any time. You can always make suggestions and give me ideas for how I can improve the class.

Class 5 Self Study Assignment (for May 19th, but due on May 29th before 11:59pm)

I am sorry for not uploading this information on May 19th. It has been a busy week for me.

The assignments below are something that I used in other classes but that I think are useful for your skills-building. I prefer giving this assignment rather than me sending you a video of my lecture.

A. PUBLIC SPEAKING

Tips (Ideas) for Public Speaking Hints

Please see these videos about public speaking. I tried to choose ones that a little bit different, and interesting:

VIDEO 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IbheB2-ixM

VIDEO 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX_DAFXQxpc

VIDEO 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TE4LfXGRRr0 (for the last part "Study and learn from your mistakes", the announcer said the name of the wrong winner of the beauty contest!)

Answer questions #1-4 at the link below.

Examples of Public Speaking

B. ANALYZING A WEBPAGE SOURCE

Please watch these videos about checking resources:

Video 1: “Evaluating Websites”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxyKHp47EnQ

Video 2: “What Are Credible Websites?”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFEwwG7rq0E

Video 3: “Evaluating Sources using CRAAP”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WJN-U4j2_A

The last video (#3) talks about the "CRAAP" test, which is used to assess if a website is reliable. The acronym CRAAP is for:

Currency: is the information current (and not too old)?

Relevance: is the content of the website useful

Author: is the author of the page (or the organization that made it) believable?

Accuracy: is the information truthful and correct?

Purpose: is the website for teaching or learning, or does it have another reason like selling something?

Please assess each of these websites below

1.

- Examine this website: https://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/

- Write down your ideas about whether the website is reliable (using some of the CRAAP words above).

2.

- Examine this website: https://www.myplate.gov/

- Write down your ideas about whether the website is reliable (using some of the CRAAP words above).

3.

- Examine this website: https://nutritiondata.self.com/

- Write down your ideas about whether the website is reliable (using some of the CRAAP words above).

- Take a photo or make a PDF of your notes, and submit them here: https://bit.ly/39YwxnH

* Please email me if you have any questions on this!

Current Event Topic (and Teaching) Assignment

1. Reading(s)

  • Choose one newspaper or magazine article that we should read (send to us by the previous Sunday at 11:59pm)

  • Write two discussion questions about the reading, put on a slide

2. Slides and Questions

  • Create 10 Powerpoint slides about the topic, with its main points, and any key charts (what you learn from other sources)

  • Ask us some questions during the class (as a group)

3. Activity

  • Do an activity that puts us into Breakout rooms (2 persons each) to discuss separately, and then re-join

Final Response Paper (due before January 30th at 11:59pm)

Assignment: Write your response to some of the issues that we have discussed in class. Please organize your ideas in coherent (understandable) paragraphs, each with a clear topic sentence.

Class Slides: For materials to use as a reminder of what we talked about this semester, see this link: https://bit.ly/3K43pct

Explanation:

  • “A personal response essay is a type of essay that asks students to think critically”, and to do so in “comparison to their own beliefs and personal experiences”

  • “It asks students to dig deep and justify their personal beliefs and feelings in terms of concrete description, logic, philosophy and reasoning”

Length: Three pages, 750-1,000 words

Grading

I am changing the assignments so that there is no "Individual Presentation" and your grade is a combination of:

- Class Participation (including online discussions and additional assignments) = 30%

- Current Event Topic and Teaching = 20%

- Seminar Paper = 40% (in aggregate, with preparatory aspects as well as the final submission)

* This adds up to 90% and I will divide the extra 10% to the three main assignments above.

Additional Assignments

Class 3:

1. Research Question: Please write 3 more detailed questions that you might answer in your research paper. Then choose the one that you will focus on, and work to make it as strong as possible. Think about 1) if the question is meaningful and interesting; and 2) the scope of the question (how big or small, or wide or narrow it is)

2. Student Current Event Topic Teaching: This semester each student will help lead one of the class sessions, on any topic that they wish to focus on. Please think about (and decide if you can) which topic you want to learn about and teach to the class. (I will also help teach, so you are not responsible for 100 minutes of material.)

Class 4:

1. Readings on Demographics: I will teach more about the topic of Demographics, and would like the students to read the two attached articles. I apologize that this is only 36 hours before class. Please read the two articles at the link below. You do not need to know them perfectly or in detail, and can just get the main ideas. I will use them for part of our discussion. If there are any words that you are unsure about and want to review in class, please write them down.

Gladstone - World Population Could Peak Decades Ahead of U.N. Forecast, Study Asserts (2020): https://bit.ly/33ABMn9

Harvey - World population in 2100 could be 2 billion below UN forecasts (2020): https://bit.ly/2Rc3u7g

Class 5:

1. Reading on Migration: Please read this short essay, and write down or circle from 5 to 10 words that you do not know:

Amrith - Why Migration Matters (2014): https://bit.ly/3bCPURx

2. Student Current Event Topic Teaching: Decide what topic you want to learn about and teach to the class on one of these dates: June 10, June 17, June 24 and July 1

3. Research Question: Please send me your current question so that we can confirm what you are writing about.

4. Sources for Your Paper: Please write a few sentences about the 5 sources (or more) that you found. This can be your summary, or the abstract, or some quotation you like. You can send this to me before May 16th at midnight. This is related to our last class when I talked to you about where you can find sources, and how to make notes.
