SAFETY

Masks: For all of our in-person (face-to-face) classes, please always wear a mask. I will try to keep social distancing within the classroom too. The situation with COVID-19 is getting better, but I want everyone to be safe.

Vaccination: If you have not gotten vaccinated yet, please consider doing this. I think it is very helpful to protect you, your family, and your classmates.

..............................................

There is a lot of new information as you start classes at Tokai. If you have any questions or comments, please email me at any time. You can always make suggestions and give me ideas for how I can improve the class.

Class 5 Self Study Assignment (May 18)

A. Tokai Library System

1.

There are 7 videos here about the library at Tokai University. Please watch two of them - or more if you want! (There is no work or questions related to this.)

https://web.microsoftstream.com/user/32c8a5d0-c8de-4e51-89ee-6f76ab82e3d5

2.

Please watch this video and answer the questions (complete this before 11:59pm on Sunday, May 22):

https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=y62DDLkXuEmlL5Mz7FkXr99JCKY7DLZFjWUu4tt_fl5UMFdLUElMTEg1M1lCUFQwTEw4SUQ0MDM5SS4u

B. Analyzing a Webpage Source

Please watch these videos about checking resources:

Video 1: “Evaluating Websites”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxyKHp47EnQ

Video 2: “What Are Credible Websites?”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFEwwG7rq0E

Video 3: “Evaluating Sources using CRAAP”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WJN-U4j2_A

The last video (#3) talks about the "CRAAP" test, which is used to assess if a website is reliable. The acronym CRAAP is for:

Currency: is the information current (and not too old)?

Relevance: is the content of the website useful

Author: is the author of the page (or the organization that made it) believable?

Accuracy: is the information truthful and correct?

Purpose: is the website for teaching or learning, or does it have another reason like selling something?

Please assess each of these websites below

1.

- Examine this website: https://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/

- Write down your ideas about whether the website is reliable (using some of the CRAAP words above).

2.

- Examine this website: https://www.myplate.gov/

- Write down your ideas about whether the website is reliable (using some of the CRAAP words above).

3.

- Examine this website: https://nutritiondata.self.com/

- Write down your ideas about whether the website is reliable (using some of the CRAAP words above).

- Take a photo or make a PDF of your notes, and submit them here: https://bit.ly/39YwxnH

(Please do this before 11:59pm on Sunday, May 22)

* Please email me if you have any questions on this!

Final Skills Assignments (due on or before July 27th at 11:59pm)

1. Reading and Note-taking (**we have already talked about this in class**)

Practice using three different speeds of reading.

- Review this idea, looking at the “Types (Speeds) of Reading” Powerpoint slide from class: https://app.box.com/s/70c21ebzxf46dki6kgwbsdv8m7d8myma.

- Download the “Fostering Global Citizenship” article, at this link: https://bit.ly/3p1DVCh

- Read the article and use different speeds to understand it:

First, scan the article and write down the key idea (in one sentence, what is the article about?)

Second, skim the article and write down the most important points

- Your notes can be written by hand (on paper) or on a computer. Take a photo or make PDF of your answers and submit them here: https://bit.ly/3yhX1t6

Extra comment: If this was an article that you needed to know very well, you could then read it all, sentence by sentence. (But you do not need to do that for this assignment.)

2. Note-taking from a Lecture (**we have already talked about this in class**)

In class we talked about ways to take notes from a lecture.

- Review the Powerpoint slides (the link is in the section above).

- Watch the video “What Are the World’s Biggest Problems?", located here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY9nxG2ZQ7w

- Write down notes on the main points of the video lecture .

- Take a photo or make a PDF of your notes, and submit them here: https://bit.ly/3yhX1t6

3. Writing Paragraphs and a Short Essay (**before you do this, we will talk about this more in class on July 20th**)

Answer this question: Why is global citizenship important?

This can be a simple essay, with two paragraphs that each present a reason. Start each paragraph with a topic sentence, and then support it with at least three more sentences that give further explanation. Then end the paragraph with a concluding sentence.

Submit your answer here: https://bit.ly/3yhX1t6

4. Making an Outline (**before you do this, we will talk about this more in class on July 20th**)

Make an outline for one of these two questions, as if you were planning to write a research paper:

1. How is COVID-19 affecting university education in Japan? (and so what should we do?)

2. Is online / Zoom education good or bad?

For example, you can start to think of the outline like this. Write bullet points or short sentences for the outline / plan of the paper.

- Introduction

- Body (that has some different sections)

- Conclusion

Submit your answer here: https://bit.ly/3yhX1t6

5. Develop a Bibliography of Sources (**before you do this, we will talk about this more in class on July 20th**)

Find 4 sources (two articles and two books) that seem useful for writing a paper about child poverty. List in the correct form for a Bibliography.

Here are some places you can look for articles and books:

- Google Scholar

- Google Books

Submit your answer here: https://bit.ly/3yhX1t6

Individual Presentation Assignment (to be presented in class on July 14th)

* Submit the Powerpoint slides to me here, before 11:59pm on July 13th: https://bit.ly/3AMsPqd

Description:

Making a public presentation is a useful skill in school and the workplace. The goal of this assignment is to have you to present key points, and explain them in English to an audience (your classmates).

What you should do:

  • Please find some interesting chart, or graph, or table that is about global citizenship, or one of the main problems / concerns in the world today.

  • Create three slides:

    1. Background: the first slide should provide bullet points of key background information that the audience needs to know, in order to understand the chart / graph / table (if you need more than one background slide that is fine)

    2. Information: the second slide should show the chart / graph / table

    3. Questions / Discussion: the third slide should have 2 or 3 questions that you want to ask the audience (classmates) about the chart / graph / table, to get everyone thinking about what is its meaning, and what it shows

  • Present these three slides to the class, teaching them about the topic. Use the Background slide to explain the key information they need to know. Then, show the chart / graph / table that you want everyone to discuss. Last, lead everyone through 2 or 3 questions that come from what you showed.

  • References / Sources: please show on the slides (or at the end with an extra slide) where you got the information
