Details for the Presentation on May 26th

On May 26th we will have in-class presentations about the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The assignment for May 26th is:

  • Please explain why the one SDG that you choose is important for Japan

  • Prepare to speak for 2-3 minutes

  • Try to memorize as much as you can (or at least be very familiar with it so you can present comfortably)

  • You can use Powerpoint if you want to and that is helpful, but you do not have to (any style that you like is fine)

  • For the May 16 Self-Study Assignment, please answer the questions below about the videos that you watched. This will help you to prepare and think about ways to improve public speaking.

Details for the Presentation on July 21st

When making a speech we need to be very comfortable with it. For the presentation assignment, please understand and memorize (as much as you can) an explanation about global citizenship:

What is a global citizen? A global citizen is someone who knows about the world. They also understand their place in it. In addition, global citizens take an active role in their community. To become global citizens, we must develop knowledge, skills and values to participate in the world. It is important to believe that we can all make a difference. Studying global citizenship helps students to build various skills. First, they think about their values and what is important to them. Second, they learn to make an argument and share their opinions. Third, they get involved in their local, national and global communities. The world has many new challenges, but everyone can make a positive change. Global citizens work with others to make our planet more peaceful, sustainable, safe, and fair.

I will grade you on:

  • remembering the words

  • speaking clearly, with good pronunciation

  • having some emotion and energy (show that you understand the words)

  • looking up at the students (eye contact)

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Details for Presentation on July 15th (due before 11:59pm on July 14th)

Choose one of the SDGs that you want others to pay attention to. Explain to us why! Make a Powerpoint presentation, and you will tell us about it on July 15th.

Make 7 slides in total:

- One Title slide (write the SDG and your name)

- One Introduction slide (give a short summary of this SDG and what it is about)

- One Conclusion slide ( tell us what we can do)

- One Sources / References slide (show where you got your information)

Presenting

- When you give the presentation on July 15th, try to speak clearly and be comfortable with what you say (this means practicing before).

Details for Class 6 Dialogue Presentation with Partner

- For this assignment, you make a practice dialogue with your class partner.

- On 15 October, your assignment is to create a dialogue (conversation) with your partner. The purpose of the dialogue is to have two people discuss the topic of climate change. (Or if you want to choose a different topic, related to international relations, please ask me.)

- You can choose to be any two people in the dialogue (adult and child, two students, a government worker, Greta Thunberg or Donald Trump, etc).

- Please make the dialogue at least 300 words long.

- Please send the document to me on Wednesday, October 14th.

- On Thursday, October 15th, each pair of students will read their dialogue to everyone else. Your grade will be based on: the dialogue writing (well written), and the speaking presentation

- We might then all take turns sharing the dialogues (different partners reading different dialogues for practice).

Details for Class 9 Self-study Assignment (due before 11:59pm on November 1st)

It is important to think about the source of where information comes from. Please watch these two videos, which explain how to find reliable websites.

Video 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aem3JahbXfk

Video 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFEwwG7rq0E

In Video 1, they talk about how to check if a website is reliable:

Currency – is the information current (and not too old)?

- When was the information published?

- Has the information been updated?

Relevance – is the chart/table/graph related to the assignment?

- Does the information relate to your topic?

Author – who is the author?

- Is the author qualified to write on the topic?

Accuracy – is the information truthful and correct?

- Where does the information come from?

- Is the information supported by evidence?

Purpose – why does the information exist?

- What is the purpose of the information? Is it to inform, teach, sell, entertain or persuade?

Please answer the questions here: https://bit.ly/2Hxbcno

Details for Class 10 Presentation (for the class on October 29th)

- Find an interesting chart, or graph, or table that is about one of the SDGs, or the environment, or climate change.

2. Information: show the chart / graph / table (also write the source where you got the information)

3. Questions: the third slide should have 2 or 3 questions that you want to ask your classmates about the chart / graph / table. This will allow them to answer and have a discussion

- Here is a sample presentation: https://app.box.com/s/6ko43zzbm7dcwwgtfv2uptpdr8mblg8x

Details for Speech Presentation (in class on November 23rd)

  • You can choose any topic you want – just select something that you care about!

  • Please send me the speech text before (or soon after) class

  • The speech should be about 2-3 minutes long.

  • Using a few notes on paper or index cards is OK, but try to memorize some parts of your speech, and look up at the audience (class) too when you speak.

  • For this speech, be sure to speak a strong voice and view the audience. Please also work on pronunciation, and remember to have energy in your presentation.

•Think about these parts when you write your speech:

> Introduction: The statement or ideas that will make the audience (class) interested.

> Main messages: These are key points, and if you are wondering what to say, you could think of the 5 W’s and 1 H (who, what, when, where, why, how).

> Conclusion: A summary or ending statement, maybe about the future or final inspiration.

How the Class Works

Attendance

  • To receive credit for attending class:

- Zoom sessions: join the call and participate; if there is an additional assignment, complete it before the deadline

- Self-study topics: complete the thinking/writing/response assignment

  • Attendance in EIS classes is very important, and the English for International Studies Department requires all students to attend at least 23 of the 28 classes. If you miss 6 classes, that is an automatic fail (please see this described in the syllabus)

  • Please submit your Workbook copies and any other documents here: https://bit.ly/2SpiuLR

Zoom Classes

  • The main purpose of the Zoom classes is for us to speak together, since our class is focused on "Listening, Speaking, and Critical Thinking". I ask that everyone please turn their camera on so that we can see each other, and, as best as possible, build a group connection online.

Grading

  • The percentages for the grades are below:

Class participation / Homework = 50%

Dialogue with Partner = 5%

Chart Presentation #1 = 10%

Speech = 10%

Chart Presentation #2 = 10%

Powerpoint Presentation = 15%

Requirements

  1. Textbook: "Pathways: Listening, Speaking, and Critical Thinking"

  2. ESL Website: Please try to connect to "MyELT".

  3. Video Conferencing: Download or make sure that you can access the Zoom program on your computer or smartphone.

  4. PDF Scanner: Please download, on your phone, a program that allows you to scan documents so they can be made into PDFs. One option is the free program "Adobe Scan" on for Android and iOS.
